When former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar responded.
Together with Delta State's incumbent governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and other party members, Okowa, who served as Atiku's running mate in the 2023 presidential election under the PDP, joined the APC.
Speaking about the development on Friday night, Atiku stated that he had been contacted by numerous Nigerians who wanted to know his thoughts on the defections. He clarified that people have the freedom to choose their political affiliation in a democracy and that he has no issue with those who have chosen to leave the PDP. He emphasised that the suffering that Nigerians are currently going through under the Tinubu-led government is the country's biggest issue, not party affiliation.
He claims that many young people are becoming frustrated, that the economy is deteriorating, that costs are increasing, and that jobs are being lost. According to Atiku, the Tinubu administration has failed and is trying to hide its subpar performance by creating division and diversions. He urged Nigerians to put the nation's needs ahead of party, ethnicity, or religious differences.
Atiku also justified his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying political leaders routinely meet and confer across party lines. He questioned why certain people attacked him for meeting Buhari, whereas others in the PDP meet with President Tinubu without being chastised.
